Health Navigator

The Health Navigator will support Indigenous participants in navigating the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program by providing information, advocacy, referrals, and individualized assistance to ensure access to eligible health services. The role focuses on helping participants understand their NIHB coverage, complete applications, resolve issues or denials, and coordinate services with healthcare providers, pharmacies, and external agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or 2-3 years of experience working in a similar role;
  • Bilingual (English and French); an Indigenous language is a strong asset;
  • Knowledge of Indigenous peoples, including histories, cultural differences, and contemporary realities;
  • Strong knowledge of the local network of organizations serving the Indigenous community;
  • Experience in securing funding, writing proposals, and managing budgets;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and strong time management skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Diplomacy, tact, and judgment;
  • Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills;
  • First Aid / CPR / ASIST certification an asset.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide individualized support to Indigenous participants in navigating the NIHB program, including eligibility, coverage, claims, appeals, and renewals;
  • Serve as a liaison between the Indigenous community and external organizations and governmental agencies to advocate for the community’s needs;
  • Provide effective leadership to the development, planning, and execution of project mandate in a team-based environment;
  • Coordinate team debriefing sessions and participate in meetings as required;
  • Assist participants with completing forms, submitting documentation, and communicating with NIHB, healthcare providers, pharmacies, and insurers;
  • Facilitate community meetings, workshops, and consultations to gather input, feedback, and ideas from community members regarding their health and wellness;
  • Support the development of future partnerships by promoting understanding of the NIHB program and advocating for providers to become more accessible to Indigenous clients
  • Assessing the needs of the participants, listening to their concerns, and providing information or referrals to the appropriate resources available to them;
  • Maintaining client files, including preparation of intake forms, documentation, input into databases;
  • Supporting our Indigenous participants with one-on-one interventions;
  • Providing a teamwork approach to promote coordinated interventions within our organization;
  • Acting as a liaison with other Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations and agencies to facilitate case management to ensure the participant’s needs are being met;
  • Submitting periodic activity reports to their Manager of the different activities, initiatives, and outcomes that are maintained for evaluation and reporting purposes;
  • Coordinate team debriefing sessions;
  • Act as a mentor providing help, guidance, encouragement, and feedback to their colleagues to help them grow and succeed in their professional development;
  • Provide guidance to other intervention workers, interns, and volunteers.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/ HOURS

The work schedule is full-time (37.5 hours per week), Monday through Friday, but may vary periodically based on organizational needs. Attendance at events, meetings, training, and workshops may be mandatory.

Salary and benefits

32.89$ per hour (Group 4), as per the Collective Labour Agreement.
